When manufacturers develop a new car, they start working on it the moment the current generation is released. That’s why their meetings are extremely secretive. Typically, you can’t even bring a phone in if you’re privileged enough to be part of those meetings.
However, one Toyota employee allegedly breached that protocol and was able to take a snap of the brand’s plans for the next four years. This is extremely big news as it includes information about both next-generation models, as well as updates and facelifts. Granted, the photo shows what the US-lineup will be like, but Toyota’s model range applies to most of the world.

First for the facelifted models is the Camry; it will be getting an update by next year. The same goes for the full-size Avalon sedan, which shares its platform with the Lexus ES. That means that the ES will likely get an update as well. While we’re on the subject of Lexus, the flagship LS sedan will also be getting a nip and tuck by 2022.

Now for the meat of the leak, the all-new models. By the fourth quarter of 2020, Toyota will unveil the next-generation Sienna minivan which will boast an all-hybrid range. It will then be accompanied by a yet to be named crossover, which could either be the B-SUV that was supposed to be launched in Europe earlier this month, or something totally different. The GR86, on the other hand, will make its debut by mid-2021, followed by another yet-to-be-named crossover in the third quarter of that year.

Toyota’s truck and SUV line will also see sweeping changes during the first half of the decade. The full-sized Tundra will be totally redesigned and the first to get the large body on frame modular platform. It will be launched at the tail end of 2021, according to the leak. That also means an all-new Sequoia, Toyota’s largest (but not most expensive) SUV could also be revealed soon. Since the frame can be adapted in different sizes, the 4Runner will be fully redesigned come 2022. The next-generation 4Runner is of much importance as it is directly related to another Toyota model, the Land Cruiser Prado.

Moving on to Lexus and it’s good news for the fans of the IS sports sedan. The Japanese alternative to the usual German big three (3 Series, C-Class, A4) will be all-new by 2021. About time too, since the current IS was first launched way back in 2013. Around the same time as the IS, Lexus will also roll out the next-generation NX crossover. As for the GS, it might live on in one way or another using the Crown/Mirai rear-wheel-drive platform. Also, Lexus will have a halo grand tourer in the form of the LC F with twin-turbo V8 power, coming 2022.

Like Toyota, the Lexus SUV range will be totally new in the coming years. A lot has been said about the future LX which will either come in LX 600 form with, according to reports, a twin-turbo V6 or as the diesel-powered LX 500d in other markets. As there will be a new 4Runner by 2022, that also means an all-new GX as well – it is slated for a 2023 introduction. With the GX being the luxury version of the Land Cruiser Prado, we might also see its next-generation model at around the same time.
These are exciting times for Toyota and Lexus, indeed, with a large chunk of their models getting redesigned or updated. If anything, Japan’s largest automaker is more than ready to take on the new decade. As for the local range, we’ll keep an eye out for new models. There are two things that are certain though, and that’s the facelifted Fortuner and Hilux.
