Every parent loves the idea of driving their kids to school, however, there are various challenges that beleaguers school runs. It could be the nature of the parents’ job, which automatically shifts this responsibility to a driver or it could be that the school these kids attend have their own school buses.
Whatever the case may be, driving a child to school requires that whoever is behind the wheel pays attention to every single detail on the road especially in the morning when the roads are quite busy. In order to avoid distractions when taking your kids to school, here are things you should do as a parent.
1. Be in the right frame of mind
Schools normally resume around 7 am and 8 am in the morning which prompts every parent to wake up very early to prepare their kids, but research shows there is an increase in road accidents during this period due to higher numbers of vehicles on the road. To be on a safer side, give yourself time. Don’t rush your kid’s breakfast and make sure you’re not leaving anything behind, not even their lunch boxes. Half-dressed kids can distract you while you’re driving. Pay close attention to every tiny detail before hitting the road
2. Check Child Seatbelts
Always check if your kids are wearing their seatbelts properly. For more on this, see this article in our database.
3. Beware of other kids
Keep in mind that there are other kids who are trekking to school and may not know every road sign. Drive carefully and watch your lane. Regulate your speed and watch out for bikes and other pedestrians on the road.
4. Park Responsibly
During early morning school runs, there are so many cars parked in front of school gates which should not be the case because children can be very unpredictable – they are likely to be concentrating on other things and might hop out of the car without minding their surroundings.
Here’s what to do, park at a reasonable distance from the school gate and walk your child into the school premises, that way, you get to interact with your child while you create a memorable bond he/she will not forget in a hurry.
5, Teach your kids road safety
Start teaching your kids about road safety as this will help in building up their consciousness that even though a car conveys people from point A to B, it can also crush people standing on its way. Most importantly, don’t leave your car keys to them, buy them a toy if they’re looking for something to play with.
