As a driver, you may have little knowledge of car repairs but there are certain tools you should always have in case your car breaks down on a road trip.
Having these tools mean that you will not be stranded on the road in case someone wants to help you perform basic checks. Find below the tools that should always be in the trunk of your car.
1. Jack and Tire Iron
This is a very important tool that should not be missing in the trunk of your car. Some newer cars come with a small jack. A simple trick is to try the jack you have in your new car even before there is a need for it. This way, you will find out if it is compatible with your car. Also, having a jack is not, seldom times, drivers are tempted to remove the tire iron from their trunks in order to create space for other items. This is a huge mistake. Don’t do it.
2. Screwdrivers
Always ensure you have a flathead and Phillips screwdriver in your car. Buy two different sizes of each type of screwdriver. You will need them if you want to remove your car battery or change windshield wipers and headlights
Screwdrivers might be small, but you will find its usefulness if something happens to your car.
3. Jumper Cables
If your car battery is dead, you may need a jumper cable to jump start it from another driver. But what if when another driver stops to help you, neither of you have jumper cables? If you don’t have jumper cables, buy one and keep in your trunk.
4. Torque Wrench
This is a specialized wrench that you can use to apply a predetermined amount of torque to a bolt or nut. Repairs are completed faster and with more precision when you use a torque wrench. It does take some knowledge to use this type of wrench so be sure you have the information you need if you are using the wrench to change a tire or spark plugs.
5. Tire Pressure Gauge
This is another useful tool most drivers fail to keep in their trunk. A tire pressure gauge is a small instrument that can keep in the glove box of your car. If you notice that one of your tires seems to be losing pressure, you can use your spare tire until you can get a mechanic to check the other tire. You should check the pressure of your tires at least every month.
Every driver should have a good set of tools in their car. You can quickly repair small problems as well as prevent problems from getting bigger.
